how to ice fish with a heater

Ice Fishing with a Heater

We get it. No one enjoys being cold while ice fishing! Ice fishing heater is the best way to fix this problem, but there is a right and wrong way to do it. An ice fishing heater must be properly vented in an enclosed space, like an ice fishing shelter. Check out our recommendations on how you should ice fish with a heater to stay safe.

Direct Vent Heater

To begin, we recommend using a direct vent heater. These are the safest heater to use when ice fishing because it features a direct vent. It emits any dangerous and combustible chemicals out of a vent that is directly attached to the heater.

Ventless Heater

Also, we recommend using a ventless heater. This is the next safest option to use inside a small closed space, like a skid house. A ventless heater does not feature a vent or chimney instead, the combustibles burn to keep the heat source producing. We recommend cracking a window or leaving a vent open while using a ventless heater. Our Skid Houses are available with a Mr. Heater 10,000 BTU Ventless Heater. Just like the above option, this heater is available alone as well.

Portable Propane Heater

Lastly, you can also use a portable propane heater in your skid house. If you are ice fishing with a heater that burns propane, you need to have proper ventilation for it to be safe. If you do not have proper ventilation, you risk explosions and carbon monoxide poisoning. Anytime you have a portable propane heater in your skid house or ice shelter, you need to keep a window open. The airflow will allow for the combustibles to escape safely.
